Names: Measles, Rubeola

History:
Measles is a virus that has been traced back to 7th century A.D. It was once thought of as a virus more dreaded then smallpox that was seen as a event in life that happened mainly before the age of 12. The virus was officially discovered in 1856 by Henry Koplik. The name of measles came from the Middle English "maselen" meaning "many little spots" referring to the rash characteristic feature of measles. The other name of measles, Rubeola, comes from the red coloring of the rash. Before the 1963 vaccine created against measles was made there were about four million cases, and an average of 450 deaths per year. After the vaccine was created and distributed the casses of meales dropped 99%.

Those at risk :

  • Anyone who never had measles and has never been vaccinated
  • Babies younger than 12 months old( they are too young to be vaccinated )
  • Those who were vaccinated before 1968

Virus Structure
  • negative,
  • single stranded RNA virus.
  • has a N-terminal domain and a C- terminal moiety. It’s M-protein is directly under the membrane.

Details

  • affects the body’s respiratory system
  • Once the virus injects its RNA into the cell, they become inflamed with in the first few hours
  • symptoms don’t show ‘til the first 3-5 days.

How does the body fight back
  • unable to fight back the virus.

How has it changed?
  • only mutated once in the last few years

Treatment
  • does not have a specific treatment but
  • most doctors give children under 2 years Vitamin A.
  • Measles Vaccine can be given to children as young as 12 months (6 months if it’s given during and outbreak)
